FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is the difference between chiropody and podiatry?
Podiatry is the new name for chiropody. The name
was changed in 1993 as the international recognised
name for a foot specialist.
What is Podiatry?
Podiatry (formerly known as chiropody) is the diagnosis
and treatment of diseases and disorders of the
feet. Podiatrists are highly skilled professionals
who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat
and rehabilitate conditions of the feet and lower
limbs.
What is a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis?
A biomechanical assessment is a detailed examination
of the lower leg, ankle and foot. Gait analysis
is used to assess the way we walk or run, to highlight
biomechanical abnormalities. Whilst of enormous
benefit to sports people in improving performance
and preventing injury, it is also important for
children and adults.
What are orthotics?
These are insoles to correct posture and mechanical
problems of the foot. Often used for controlling
excessive pronation, commonly known as flat feet
or fallen arches, but can be used for other conditions.
These can be custom made, but we always try to
use ready-made insoles wherever possible to reduce
costs.
Why is foot care so important if you have diabetes?
Diabetics (Type I and II) can cause nerve and blood
vessel damage from high glucose levels in the blood,
which leads to decreased sensation (neuropathy)
and reduced blood supply within the lower limb
and foot. The changes are gradual, but it is important
to check feet regularly in order to prevent problems
from becoming worse.
